With Father’s Day just around the corner, Foot Locker asked some of the NBA’s top draft prospects to reflect on what their dads have done to support them on their soon-to-be-completed journey to the pros.

Most of the players, such as De’Aaron Fox, Jonathan Isaac and Jayson Tatum, offered typical examples of paternal guidance.

But LaVar Ball’s dad, LaVar, is no ordinary basketball dad. LaVar has become famous — even infamous — for his ridiculous comments, some of which have invited controversy during Lonzo’s transition from UCLA guard to the hopeful No. 2 pick of the Lakers.

In a rare appearance without LaVar by his side, Lonzo pumped some solid, self-deprecating humor into the Foot Locker spot.

“Of course there’s that big day when your dad berates your high school coach in front of an entire crowd for not getting you enough touches,” Lonzo said, signaling a comedic pause to the dramatic music.

“Or that special moment when your dad sits you down and tells you where you’re going to college. … Copyrights your name to make it a part of a family lifestyle brand. … Went on First Take and shouted back and forth with Stephen A. Smith about how you’re already better than the reigning league MVP. … All those interviews from the stands during college games. … The public spats with all-time greats. … Soundbite after soundbite to the national media. … And then tells 29 out of 30 teams to not bother drafting you.”

“And fishing,” Tatum concluded. “We went fishing a lot.”

To LaVar, any publicity appears to be good publicity, even if it’s coming at your own expense from your son right before Father’s Day.

But the grateful dad certainly set himself up for all of it.
