NEW YORK CITY (WPVI) — Kelly Rowland has added “author” to her long list of roles with the release of her first book, “Whoah Baby!”
The former member of Destiny’s Child has been a singer, an actress and a wife, but in the fall of 2014, she took on another role as the mother to a baby son. And she candidly admitted to feeling “overwhelmed.”
Her book was written with the help of her own doctor and various friends, who helped her after the birth of her first child.
She has been famous since the age of 16 and has sold more than 60 million records, but she’s had never been a mom until son Titan arrived. And her book serves as a guide for new moms.
“There were so many books that told me what’s going on with the baby,” Rowland said. “Baby, baby, baby. I was like ‘What about me?'”
She knows that new moms feel “overwhelmed and freaked out,” and she wanted to do her part to help out.
“I just wanted to stay on the mom perspective, because there are so many things that happen to us — mentally, physically, spiritually, emotionally — that we go through,” she said. “And I wanted to touch on all that.”
Rowland is a self-admitted control freak, but motherhood changed her.
“Absolutely, only because things change moment to moment,” she said. “You don’t have any control over what could happen.”
As a woman once labeled the seventh Most Beautiful Person in the World by People Magazine, Rowland is candid when it comes to the year after giving birth.
“I remember looking at my body after I had my baby,” she said. “I don’t know her, the person looking back at me. It’s like you, girl, you just had a baby. Calm down.”
And yet, she put pressure on herself to bounce back.
“I went to the gym,” she said. “And I damn near had a heart attack because I didn’t know my body wasn’t physically ready.”
She realized that while working out to Pharrell.
“I’m going up the treadmill, and I’m, after three minutes, like, losing my breath,” she said. “And I really had to tell myself to pace it.”
A year after giving birth, Rowland resumed her career before teaming up with her doctor to write the book, filled with all that she learned.
Rowland says “Whoa Baby!” is the book she wished she could have read before Titan was born.
