Honda wants to build on the Civic Type R’s hype with new family of performance models.
During the hot hatch’s recent US launch, the Civic model line chief engineer Hideki Matsumoto revealed to Automotive News that the brand has a number of variants planned to maintain sales volume.
“We’re hoping that by gradually putting out more that we’ll be able to maintain a more stable sales volume,” said Matsumoto.
Which would mean that once the sales of the initial 235kW/400Nm Civic Type R start to decline, the Japanese car maker can inject an new variant.
One such new variant would be a track-focused model that has more power but would cut back on everyday creature comforts.
Another option under consideration is a less aggressive model, which Matsumoto describes as being developed around “the grand touring aspect”. This model could potentially have a greater level of kit and more forgiving suspension to make it more appealing to everyday drivers.
Eventually, Honda will also look to take on the top echelon of hot hatches with an all-wheel drive variant to directly compete with the Foid Focus RS and the Volkswagen Golf R.
Honda hasn’t revealed any information about an automatic version of the Type R, but with the growing popularity of self-shifters – even among performance car buyers – the potential for Honda to add an auto version is a strong possiblity. The Japanese car maker recently announced a 10-speed auto for its next-generation Accord, which could play a part in a future Type R auto.
The Type R is now available to pre-order locally, however full pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to the launch date in October, where it is expected to be priced below $50,000.
